Hi everyone! I grew up spending a part of my summers in Wells, Maine and I still love visiting there to this day! Now, I usually only take a day trip or overnight to Wells. Since I’ve been many times I’ve created a list of spots I hit every time I visit. Also, I now like to visit Wells in early September because it will usually still be nice weather and you can avoid the crowds. This is how I like to spend a day in Wells, Maine!
Congdon’s Doughnuts
1090 Post Rd, Wells, ME 04090
My first stop is always at Congdon’s Doughnuts! This has become a staple favorite of mine and I always get up extra early to get to Congdon’s before they sell out. Every donut I’ve had is delicious, but my personal favorites are the lemon filled, bavarian creme filled, maple creme filled, chocolate honey, chocolate chocolate, and strawberry frosted!
I’ll bring my donut box to Wells Beach to eat them, enjoy the sunshine, and relax to the sound of the ocean. Just be careful of the seagulls, they will swoop down and steal your food!
Relax at Wells Beach
Wells Beach is a great place to relax, but it does get quite busy during the summer months. Another great perk is that the beach and the parking are free, which is also why it gets busy. At Wells Beach, you can explore the rocky edge during low tide or explore the shops during high tide. There are some fun shops to visit with touristy items, food, and my personal favorite Perkins Cove Candies!
If you are able to stay later in the day Wells Beach is a great place to watch the sunset between the beach houses. You can enjoy a nice evening walk with a stunning view!
Perkins Cove Candies
966 Post Rd, Wells, ME 04090
With 2 locations, one at Wells Beach, only open seasonally and the main store located on Post Road, Perkins Cove Candies is a must-stop for me! They sell saltwater taffy, which is a favorite of mine, but they also sell homemade chocolates and candies. A personal favorite is the homemade dark chocolate turtles and peanut butter cups!
Billy’s Chowder House
216 Mile Rd, Wells, ME 04090
Right down the road from Wells Beach is Billy’s Chowder House. There are lots of great seafood restaurants in Wells, but Billy’s is my favorite! I have eaten at the restaurant, but it’s usually very loud and busy, so I prefer ordering take-out and going back to Wells Beach to eat on the benches or on the beach. My go-to order is the fried scallops with fries and a cup of clam chowder! The scallops are expensive, but worth it in my opinion because I usually only get them here!
Renys
107 Wells Plaza, Wells, ME 04090
One of my favorite chain stores to visit in Maine is Renys! It’s like an Ocean State Job Lots if you know what that is, but it’s so much better! You can purchase lots of name-brand clothing items at a great discount and fun food items! My favorite thing to check out is the food section. I really like Fox Family Potato Chips, which are made in Maine, so I always stock up when I visit Renys. The salt and pepper and sour cream and onion flavors are my favorite! They also tend to have maple creme-filled sandwich cookies, which are absolutely delicious!
Annie’s Book Stop Wells
676 Post Rd #7, Wells, ME 04090
One of my most recent favorite stops, which I just re-discovered is Annie’s Book Stop Wells. I used to visit this bookshop as a kid with my Nana and on my last trip to Wells I finally went back! It is a used and new bookshop with lots of books from Maine authors as well! As of September 2023, the used books are 1/2 the price of what’s printed on the book, which is a great deal in my opinion! The employees there were also super nice and helpful!
Ride the Trolley
Lastly, if you have time, ride the trolley around! It’s a great way to see lots of Wells and surrounding towns like Ogunquit and York. I have not ridden the trolley recently but, I used to love riding the trolley with my Nana. We would hop on and off all through the towns to visit different places! It always reminds me of the summers I spent in Wells with her whenever I see a trolley!
I hope you enjoyed reading how I like to spend a day in Wells, Maine! Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever been to Wells! Are there any places you recommend I check out next time?
