Hi everyone! I hope you enjoyed part 1 of the foods I ate throughout Europe. You can read part 1 here! If you want to read a more in-depth post about my backpacking trip through Europe check it out on my travel page. As promised, this week I am going to take you through the food of Prague, Germany, Switzerland, France, and London. In the last post, I was sharing how we were leaving Budapest and heading to our next destination, Prague.
Foods Throughout the Czech Republic
Prague
We journeyed to Prague on a very long bus ride. After this ride, I much prefer to ride trains or airplanes, even if they cost more money. However, on our ride we stopped at some rest stops where I bought some fun and different candy, specifically two different types of Kinder chocolate. Kinder bars and anything Kinder are my favorite candies. I don’t quite remember what we had for lunch, but by the time we made it to Prague I was tired and very hungry. We found a pizzeria near our hostel and I had pasta and elderberry lemonade.
The next morning after having a good night’s sleep we explored the city. Our first stop was at Cafe Boulevard to have Palacinky Sladke. They are sweet pancakes, like a crepe, but not as sweet. I had mine with strawberries, banana, whipped cream (which was not sweet), and chocolate sauce. After a full day of visiting the John Lennon wall and Charles Bridge, we found dinner at a nice cafe where I had salmon with mashed potatoes and spinach and a fancy ginger ale.
On our last day in Prague, we ate some breakfast at the hostel and then made our way to a few bookstores. For lunch, we found this cafe and had some chicken burgers. Then we stopped and had one of the best desserts, Chimney Cakes. They are hollow in the middle, almost like fried dough and the center is filled with ice cream. I had the blizzard flavor, which was vanilla and chocolate ice cream swirled with a graham cracker teddy bear. We had a small dinner of snacks from the grocery store. The next morning we were headed to Germany so we just bought food from the grocery store again.
Food Throughout Germany
Munich
Our first stop in Germany was Munich where we ate dinner at the first Italian restaurant in the city, called Ca’D’oro. It was delicious! I had a margarita pizza and a Fanta. While we were exploring we found real kinder eggs, not the joy ones that the US makes. Again, I love Kinder chocolate!
In the morning we packed up and ate breakfast at the hostel. We had a very somber day going to the Dachau Concentration Camp. Afterward, we took the train to my friend’s family’s place. It was nice to stay with them and have a home-cooked meal. The next morning her family brought us to the train station and we headed to Switzerland.
Food Throughout Switzerland
We spent the first few days in Switzerland with more of my friend’s family. For dinner, we ate at their Italian restaurant. We had salads, tuna and onion pizza, and veggie and chicken pizza. It was all incredible! After dinner, we stopped to get some ice cream. I had chocolate ice cream with apple slices and brittle, it was very fancy.
In the morning my friend’s aunt made us breakfast and we had these cookies that were shaped like nuts and filled with sweet milk. She made them and these are some of the best cookies I have ever had. We had a nice time exploring with her family and went out to eat for lunch and had a nice salad for dinner. The next morning we had breakfast and then they took us to the train station. Our next stop was Gimmelwald.
Gimmelwald
After 2 train rides, a bus ride, and then a ride on the gondola we made it to the mountain village, Gimmelwald. This is my favorite place I have ever visited, but not my favorite food place. Nonetheless, when we arrived we took the gondola one village up to Murren to find food because Gimmelwald is a very small village. We found a restaurant and split some fried chicken and a salad and had some cheesecake. Before we headed back to our hostel we stopped at the co-op to get some dinner and breakfast food.
On our only full day in Gimmelwald, we had extremely thick fog, but we were going to make the most of it! We started the morning by having breakfast at the hostel then we headed back to Murren to explore more and do some hiking. After spending some time journaling and exploring, we tried to find some lunch, but nothing was open. So we went to the gondola station to the cafe. I had a cappuccino, Caprese sandwich, and banana bread. After doing some more exploring with these other 2 girls from the hostel we ate salads for dinner.
We spent as much time at Gimmelwald as possible and then headed on our way to Nyon, Switzerland. At one of the train stations, we found Kinder Bueno ice cream bars and they were delicious! Our next stop was to stay in a town outside of Geneva with my family friends.
Geneva
I had a nice time visiting with my family friends and eating nice home-cooked meals. While we were there we went to Geneva for the day. We packed ourselves some lunch and walked around the city, where were found some churros and ate by the water. For dinner, we had one of my favorite meals, Raclette. It’s a grill/oven that you have on the table and you melt special raclette cheese that you put over potatoes, pineapple, meats, veggies, really anything you want. I first had this meal with them when I visited a few years before and I was so glad to have it again!
In the morning we were heading to France to visit my exchange student and her family from when I was in high school. We had a nice breakfast and then headed to the train station.
Foods Throughout France
I had a really nice time visiting with my exchange student and her family. They made us a delicious dinner of turkey, rice with lots of spices and tomatoes. Then we had my favorite thing about France, eating bread and cheese. I tried cow, goat, and sheep cheese. We were only staying one night, so the next morning we enjoyed all of our time together, and then we had a cold Morrocan salad with couscous and veggies. Then more cheese and bread! My friend dropped us off at the train station and then we headed to Paris!
Paris
Ah Paris, comment je t’aime! The hotel that we were staying at was a little out of the way, but since we had the energy we headed to the Eiffel Tower to find dinner. We found this cafe where I had fried chicken, fries, and chocolate mousse. After dinner, we stayed out late to watch the twinkling lights on the tower.
The next morning we stopped at the supermarket to get some breakfast and then brought it to the Eiffel Tower to enjoy the view. I had yogurt and a pain au chocolat. After going to the top of the tower we had some ice cream and then went to find some crepes. I first came to Paris in 2016 on my exchange program and remembered this cart near the Eiffel Tower that sold the most delicious crepes. Luckily it was still there, at least I think it was the same one!
After having some downtime we headed back out to the Arc de Triomphe and had Thai food for dinner. I had chicken pad thai which was very good! We walked the Avenue des Champs Elysees and went to get Laduree Macaroons. These are the best macaroons I’ve ever had and I highly recommend them! I tried the rose, orange blossom, and lemon ones.
For breakfast the next morning we went to a patisserie and I had another pain au chocolate and a cappuccino. We spent the morning at the catacombs and it was a much longer wait than we thought it was going to be. So afterward, we found lunch at a cafe that was close to the exit. I had a margarita pizza, which was pretty good. We were exploring more of Paris and happened upon a boba tea shop. I don’t remember what I ordered, but I do remember that it was delicious! We had our go-to supermarket dinner again because we were doing laundry that night.
The next day we headed to Versailles. For breakfast, we just ate food that we had purchased from the supermarket and then headed to the train station. We toured the Chateau de Versailles first and afterward went into town to find lunch. I don’t remember where or what we ate, but I do remember feeling out of place and it being very busy! After lunch, we headed to the gardens of Versailles, which is my absolute favorite part! We rented bikes and after we rode them around for a while we found some ice cream. Then we headed back to Paris. For dinner, we headed to a creperie. We had wheat crepes for dinner and dessert. I had a bacon, cheddar and tomato savory crepe, and a Nutella sweet crepe.
This is again another part of the trip where I’m not feeling well, but I try to make the best of it because French food is my favorite. We stopped for breakfast at a cafe where I had a muffin and some orange juice. After doing some exploring we bought some cheese and fresh bread and fruit to have a picnic. We were going to find a place outside to eat, but because I wasn’t feeling well we just ate in our hotel. If you ever go to France this is the biggest recommendation I give you, find some incredible bread and cheese and have a picnic and eat it all!
Even though I wasn’t feeling well I was determined to have escargot because I will only ever have it in France. We ended up going to Bouillon Chartier, which is the restaurant I went to on my exchange trip. I’m pretty sure I ordered the same exact thing and it was just as delicious. My friend and I shared escargot and a garden salad, then I had fried chicken and fries.
After a nice long stay in Paris, we were headed to London. For breakfast, we ate more food that we had in our room. Then we headed to the supermarket to make salads to have for lunch later. We took the train through the Chunnel and then we were in England!
Foods Throughout England
London
We made it to London and found our hotel, my absolute favorite place where we stayed the whole trip. We discovered that we were right across the street from an underground vintage market and a pop-up food market. Obviously, we had to get dinner from there. I ended up getting pad thai, which I saw being cooked in front of me, plus some egg rolls. We also stopped at the Chai Guys and I had Kashmiri Chai, which was amazing.
The hotel provided breakfast, so the next morning I had some toast and yogurt. We were both feeling pretty tired, so we decided to explore the area we were staying in for the day. We ended up finding Spitalfields market and found some Indian food for lunch. I had butter chicken and naan and we brought it back to our hotel. By this point, we were both pretty exhausted from traveling and sort of hit a wall. After relaxing we headed back to the food market across the street to get some dinner, as good as the pad thai was the night before I wanted to try something new. I went for a honey/lemon chicken meal with rice and a sugar cane juice. We also bought a ton of desserts to try!
We again had breakfast at the hotel, I had a bagel this morning. Instead of going out, we decided to relax and head out during lunchtime. We wanted to find fish and chips for lunch and decided to go to Poppies, which apparently has the best fist and chips in London. We ended up getting codfish and a pot of earl grey twinings tea to share. In the afternoon we decided to watch Harry Potter and journal. For dinner, we wanted to go back to the food market across the street, but it wasn’t open, so we found Street Lanes Kitchen. It was a very retro-looking restaurant that was in a bowling alley. I had a chocolate milkshake and a chicken burger with sweet potato fries.
The next day we went out exploring more, but first, we had breakfast at our hotel. We ended up stopping at a pizza place near us for lunch and then ordered one to go for dinner. I also went into a chocolate shop, where I bought mint and hazelnut crunch candies. We also had some delicious ice cream from there.
Today was our last day in London and we decided to go to the West End to watch some theatre productions. As always we had a good breakfast at our hotel and then got ready to head to Piccadilly Circus. Before we headed to our first show, Les Miserables, we found a boba tea shop, where I had rose milk and strawberry jelly tea. We found a dinner place on the way to our next show, Mamma Mia. I had salmon and a cream soda. We had a wonderful rest of our night singing and dancing to Mamma Mia. The next morning we made our way to the airport and flew home!
That concludes everything I ate on my backpacking trip through Europe. I hope you enjoyed reading and following along on this fun food journey! Thank you so much for your support! I am really enjoying writing and recording my podcast, but it is a lot of work to do on top of my job. I started my blog and podcast as a hobby and a creative outlet and I never want to feel guilty or upset if I can’t post something. So I decided that I am going to alternate posting on my blog and podcast every Friday, starting this week. There is no podcast episode, but you can be sure to hear one next Friday! Feel free to follow me on Instagram or Facebook, and also sign up for my mailing list to know exactly when and what I’m posting. Have a wonderful day!
Take care and stay safe,
